What Operational Maturity Actually Looks Like

"Our operations are pretty solid" is usually a feeling, not a finding. Operational maturity is more specific than that: is the process documented somewhere other than one person's head? Does it survive that person taking a week off? Is there a way to measure whether it's working, or does everyone just find out when it fails?

A mature process has an owner, a documented version, a way to measure it, and enough redundancy that no single absence breaks it. An immature process might work perfectly well right up until the moment it doesn't — and that moment tends to arrive exactly when the organization can least afford it, during growth or a busy period.
