The Difference Between Buying Software and Redesigning Operations
June 16, 2026 · ALB Growth Agency
It's tempting to treat an operational problem as a shopping decision — find the software category, evaluate three vendors, sign a contract, expect the problem to resolve. Sometimes that works, when the underlying process was already sound and just needed a faster tool.
More often, the process itself is the problem, and a new tool just gives the same broken process a new interface. Referrals still get lost if nobody owns the handoff step, regardless of which system logs the referral. Documentation still backs up if the workflow around it doesn't change, regardless of which platform stores the documents.
Technology selection should follow future-state design, not lead it. Decide what the operating model needs to do first. Choose the tool that fits that model second.
What Operational Maturity Actually Looks Like
Maturity isn't a feeling. It's a specific, checkable set of properties a process either has or doesn't.
